FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
BEFORE BOOKING
What happens in the case of bad weather?
Cloud and rain are no fun, especially when the alternative is a magic night under a dark, starry sky. While every effort is made, the weather is one of the few things that we really cannot control. To make sure we offer the best starry night tour experience we will email you at 2pm on the day of the tour if we need to cancel but we will continue to monitor the weather.
In the unlikely event of cancellation due overcast skies, we will offer you two options:
1. Choose to reschedule your tour within a period of 10 days. (Tours are conducted every Friday and Saturday night during the year and extra weeknight tours are held during the school holidays).
2. Choose to receive a gift card valid for a period of two years.
How long are the tours?
Our starry night tours are 90 minutes in duration.
What is the best time to join a tour?
As the Earth orbits the Sun the starry night sky changes week by week, month by month.
At different times, you will see the Milky Way, the Moon, the planets, Orion, Scorpius and even a galaxy or two. If you like the Milky Way, the best times are New Moon or when the moon has already set. The moon itself has many aspects which change from night to night. Regardless of whether the moon is at its crescent or gibbous phase, it’s a fascinating object to see up close.
If you have something specific (a favourite constellation, for example) that you would like to see, please email us and we will reply with a suitable window to see that object.
Is the site wheelchair accessible?
Yes. The stars belong to everyone. Our site is at the edge of the carpark at the end of Dammeral Cres, Emerald Beach.
Does the tour involve walking?
No. The site is adjacent to the LAMN walking track carpark.
Is it suitable for Young Children?
Our tours are designed for ages 5yo and older. Younger children are welcome at no charge but may find the tour content a bit challenging to follow so they may not get the most out of the tour.
We understand that kids are sometimes impatient or easily bored – we’ve all been kids and / or had them ourselves – so we kindly ask parents to keep the atmosphere calm and peaceful so all our guests can enjoy the experience.
Are the tours Dog Friendly?
Our Location is in a National Park and so, unfortunately, dogs are not permitted on tours.
How can I get there without a car?
NSW Transport Route 393 (Woolgoolga to Coffs Harbour) operates a limited service in both directions from Solitary Islands Way, near Fiddamans Road. It’s about 1.6 km (22 mins) walk from our site but at night the services are two hours apart. Check the current timetable for details.
UBER and some taxi services are available on demand.
We are exploring partnerships with tourism transport companies so watch this space.
Which tour? After sunset or second tour?
Our tours, as advertised, commence about 30 to 45 minutes after sunset with stars visible towards the end of the introduction.
From time to time we will run a second tour, commencing 90 minutes after the first in which you will be entirely immersed in darkness. If there is no second tour advertised on a particular date and you have a group of greater than 10, please shoot us an email and request it.
AFTER BOOKING
Can I change the date of my booking?
Absolutely. Please contact or email us to request a change of date or any change in your booking and we will send you your new ticket or gift voucher. You may change your booking up to 24 hours before the commencement of the tour. There is no refund for non-attendance.
What should I wear or bring?
There is nothing to bring – just your curiosity – the more interested you are the more interesting it is for everyone.
Look At Me Now Headland has a mild climate tempered by the ocean several hundred metres away, so a light sweater or cardigan is often plenty. It can get cold during the winter so a warm jacket is recommended. Sensible shoes are a must. It will be dark and some of the ground is uneven.
Is there parking available?
Yes. There is plenty of free parking available.
What are the diet options for hot chocolate?
Our hot chocolate contains lactose free milk and is gluten-free.
Can I take photos?
Of course you can. As many as you like and videos, too.
We would love to see them so please tag us @starrynighttours on social media so we can share them.
We only ask that you do not use bright lights or flashes so everyone can maintain their night vision and fully enjoy the dark sky above.
OTHER QUESTIONS
I’ve never done a star gazing tour before. Is there anything I should know?
To get the maximum effect our tours are conducted under conditions that are as dark as possible. At Look At Me Now (LAMN), the carpark and access paths are quite flat and getting from your car to the telescope is easy. Ambient red or orange light, as well as signage, is provided for guidance and safety but will be kept to a minimum. The headland is home to several mobs of kangaroos, one of which lives adjacent to the tour location. This mob is well known to us and, like all mobs at LAMN, they are well used to humans.
Are we alone in the Universe?
Good question.
